LU Student Taliah Belcher named TSUS Regents' Student Scholar

Taliah Belcher, senior accounting and finance major, has been awarded the 2021 an honor that includes a commemorative medallion, a board resolution and a $5,000 credit toward educational expenses. Student scholars are formally recognized at the Board of Regents meeting held on Nov. 19 at Sam Houston State University.

The Board of Regents of TSUS recognizes at least one outstanding student from a TSUS member institution each year with the Regents’ Student Scholar Award. The chancellor selects student scholars based on their outstanding academic achievement, leadership abilities and community involvement. taliah-belcher

“This is such a surreal moment for me being recognized as a TSUS scholar” Belcher said. “I didn’t expect that I would be able to accomplish all of these things especially going through adversities and difficult experiences, but this moment teaches me that I am doing the right things and I am on the right path.”

From the start of her freshman year, the Plano native has been actively involved in numerous campus clubs and organizations. She currently serves LU as an ambassador, a member of the Honors College, a member of the College of Business community service committee, president of accounting honor society Beta Alpha Psi, president of the College of Business Student Advisory Council, student director and co-chair for Cardinal SOAR, and a resident assistant on campus. She previously served as secretary and treasurer for the Student Government Association.

Belcher was recently awarded a grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research in support of her research proposal and creative activities under the mentorship of Gevorg Sargsyan, assistant professor of finance. Her research will take a closer look at the impact of militarization on the financial and economic growth of developing and highly militarized countries.

She plans to study abroad in Alicante, Spain next spring and will be analyzing the opportunity cost of spending on defense versus investing in public goods and services.

“Taliah is a 4.0 student and there’s no doubt that she will go far. Her enthusiasm to go above and beyond with no limitations in the classroom is something very rare,” Sargsyan said. “When I’m working with Taliah, I know that I am working with a top-tier student who wants to learn at every single minute and use every opportunity to grow.”

Belcher recently completed the 6-week Start Internship program with Big Four Accounting Firm . Next summer, she will serve as a tax intern at PwC and said she’s ready for any opportunities that come her way.

“I have a motto for each year that I try to stick to and my motto for this past year was ‘become comfortable with being uncomfortable and seize the opportunity,’” she said. “If there’s any advice that I could give to incoming Cardinals or current students, it’s to just go for it and you will do great things.”
