The COAS Student Success Committee strives to enable and educate faculty on student 番茄社区 methods in their courses in order to retain students and help them complete their degree and to find and mitigate student challenges or obstacles to retention and completion.

Department Initiatives

Strategic 番茄社区 initiative each department will pursue in the 2023 - 2024 academic year.

Biology

Initiative: Create and implement one engaged learning activity per gateway course (1406/1407) per academic year
When: Each academic year
Who: Terry/Kish-Molina/Yoder
Measurement: Activity creation and implementation

Chemistry & Biochemistry

Initiative: Encourage Faculty to mentor students in undergraduate research and have them participate at the Undergraduate Research Expo and/or Chemistry Poster Competition
When: Every year

Measurement: Increase in the number of students participating in research and presenting at the Undergraduate Expo and/or Chemistry Poster Competition

Computer Science

Initiative: Enhance the CS First Year 番茄社区 by regularly accessing and improving the effectiveness of the program, organize training sessions for master's students, and develop a comprehensive CS graduate student handbook.
When: Y23-24
Who: CS Faculty and 番茄社区 Advisor.
Measurement: Exit Survey and Interview and yearly assessment process.

Earth and Space Sciences

Initiative: Bring in company representatives, alum, and faculty from 番茄社区 and other institutions to talk about geoscience careers.

English and Modern Languages

Initiative: Workshops in Spring 2024 to address meeting the challenges of Chat GPT, AI, etc. with up-to-date pedagogical interventions, encouraging more faculty participation in ACUE training, peer observation of teaching, career preparation workshops for both undergraduate and graduate students (open to all majors)
When: Fall 2023/Spring 2024

JoAnne Gay Dishman School of Nursing

Initiative: All new nursing faculty without a formal educational background in nursing education will be offered the opportunity to take 3 nursing education courses offered in the MSN program and earn a post-masters certificate in nursing education
When: Enroll in an MSN education course 6 months after hire and complete the 3 courses within the first two years of employment
Who: New nursing faculty without a formal educational background in nursing education
Measurement:

Successful completion of a post-masters certificate in nursing education after completing the following courses:

  1. MSNE 5350 Role Development, Learning Theory and Teaching Strategies for Nursing Educators 
  2. MSNE 5351 Curriculum Design
  3. MSNE Measurement & Evaluation

Mathematics

Initiative: Sponsor workshop for faculty to support new ways of incorporating study skills into coreq courses

Physics

Initiative: Peer Instruction (Tutoring), + Preparatory Physics (Phys 1370) + OpenStax in College Physics I/II

Political Science

Initiative: Professional development seminars, i.e. interviewing, LSAT prep, etc…
When: Throughout the year.
Who: Various members of the department and the Pre-law society.
Measurement: Did they occur and number of students attending the seminars.

Psychology

Initiative: PSYC 2302 (Careers in PSYC) “Career Track” course assignment
When: Spring 2024
Who: Dr. Jodi Katz (PSYC 2302 instructor)
Measurement: Scores on rubric created for project. Number of students attending graduate school and number of students attending our own graduate program.

Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice

Initiative: Student Success Coordinator (SSC) will attend 番茄社区 Director’s Meeting to discuss collaborative work toward student 番茄社区.
When: November 2, 2023
Who: Student Success Coordinator (Christy George), Department Chair (Gummelt), all 番茄社区 Directors (L. Wright, Harden, Lin, & Krause)
Measurement: Increased engagement with the Student Success Coordinator.  番茄社区 Directors will have a minimum of one direct contact with the SSC during the 2023-2024 academic year.
