Study Abroad

The globe has become a very diverse and integrated place, and having international experience is a vital component of a well-rounded education in the 21st century.

Studying abroad may be one of the most beneficial experiences for a university student. By studying abroad, students have the opportunity to study in a foreign nation and take in the allure and culture of a new land. In addition, study abroad programs are often conducted at a specialist institute, which allows students to strengthen a particular academic aspect during this time.

Opportunities for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences offers study abroad opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students each year. Students have opportunities to learn about interprofessional collaboration, interdisciplinary research and cross-cultural studies in communication sciences and disorders in places such as Brazil, Ireland, Sweden, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

We encourage students to take short-term (1-2 month) placement opportunities in a different country during the course of the program. These placement visits are made during university off-term time (e.g., Christmas break, summer, etc). During this placement, students can engage in a variety of activities, including engaging in clinical work, conducting a pilot research study abroad, and/or learning about community-based rehabilitation in rural settings. Some placements may provide a combination of these.

Credits not Awarded for Placement

Generally there are no credits awarded to these placements. However, if students engage in research activity, they may be able to do this as a part of a 3-credit "problems and project" course. Moreover, students who are involved in clinical work may be able to use their clinical work time towards their clinical placement hours.

We have identified placements in more than 10 countries across the globe including:

  • Brazil
  • Cambodia
  • Finland
  • Guatemala
  • India
  • Malaysia
  • Nepal
  • Portugal
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Singapore
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

These placement sites vary and they could be in a variety of settings, such as hospital, community-based charity, university, and so forth.

Scholarships Available

Students have to cover their own expenses. However, there are some general scholarships available through the university which may be used towards these placements.
